Born in Split, he graduated conducting in 1959 on the Music Academy in Zagreb and continued to learn with Milan Sachs, Hermann Scherchen
and Herbert von Karajan. For years he worked with great conductors such as Lovro pl. Matačić, Ferdinand Leitner, Otmar Suitner, Nikolaus
Harnoncourt and the composers of the 20th century classics, such as for example, Benjamin Britten, Carl Orff, Oliver Messiah, Luigi
Dallapiccola, Goffredo Petrassi, Dmitri Shostakovich, Luigi Nono.

After being the conductor and director of the Zagreb Opera (1965th-74th), he was hired as a permanent conductor of opera in Zurich, St. Petersburg and Graz, where he was chief conductor of the local Philharmonic. He is a regular guest conductor of the Hamburg Opera, Vienna State Opera and La Scala in Milan, where it was first performed in 1991 conducting Richard Wagner's Parsifal and pointed out a number of successful performances. He is a regular guest of leading opera houses in Paris, Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Dresden, Leipzig, Prague, Bologna, Florence, Parma, Oslo, Moscow, Riga, Minsk.

From 2001 to 2007 he was the chief music director of the Opera and Robert Schumann Philharmonic Orchestra in Chemnitz. He is a regular guest and other foreign concert stages where, in cooperation with leading European orchestras, Salzburg, Munich, Frankfurt, Dusseldorf, Rotterdam, Milan, participated in numerous important world stages. With the popular orchestras participated in numerous music festivals, for example, held 25 concerts with five different European orchestras, including the Mozarteum in the Festspielhaus. In particular, is committed to contemporary music and a lot of attention
paid to Croatian musical heritage and new works of local composers.
