The Makropulos affair’There is a woman, who is 337 years old, but still young and beautiful. We know that she is unhappy… We are happy, though we know that life is short. That is why every moment should be used properly’ – explained Leoš Janáček the message of his opera. The main character, Elina Makropulos lives her long, more and more unhappy life under the same initals, but different names, until she realizes: it is finiteness that gives meaning to human life.
Janáček’s poetical, powerful opera is full of beautiful melodies and rich harmonies, and it charms connoisseurs, too. The stage-director of the performance is Dmitry Bertman, who is also the founder of the world-famous Helikon Opera. This non-conventional company has already performed seven times in Miskolc, always with huge success.
