Hungarian mezzo-soprano Ildiko Komlosi studied music at the Franz Liszt Academy of Budapest and took part in the specialising courses of the Teatro alla Scala and Guildhall School of Music in London. She was the absolute winner of the Pavarotti International Competition in 1986 and debuted in Verdi's Messa da Requiem opposite Luciano Pavarotti and under the baton of Lorin Maazel.
She has subsequently started a successful career on the world's great stages: after her debut at the Frankfurt Staatsoper and the Wiener Staatsoper, in 1990 she sang in her first Teatro alla Scala production. During the following years she conquered North and South America and the Far East. She is frequently invited to the greatest theatres of the world: Metropolitan Opera of New York, Covent Garden in London, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Munich, Tokyo, Semperoper in Dresden, Teatro alla Scala in Milan and other Italian theatres.
Among her last successes were the Zeffirelli production of Aida, the opening title of the Scala Season in 2006, another great Aida in Covent Garden, directed by Robert Wilson and conducted by Antonio Pappano. In the last 5 years she was invited every year to sing at the Arena di Verona in several roles: Carmen, Amneris, Santuzza, Laura. In 2006 she was awarded the Arena Award together with Jose Cura. In 2009 she sang Santuzza at the Metropolitan, which was followed by another big success in 2012, singing in Die Frau ohne Schatten, both with great success. In 2016 she received the highest honor, the Kossuth Prize from the Hungarian government. She continues to sing around the world: you can see her performing at many big festivals and great theatres, such as the Hungarian State Opera, the Verbier Festival in 2016, at the Arena di Verona, at the PROMS in London and with the Boston Sypmhonic Orchestra in their hometown.
She recently performed in Die Frau ohne Schatten (Die Amme) at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, in Parsifal (Kundry) at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, in Bluebeard’s Castle at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan under the baton of Alain Gilbert, opening the 2015-2016 symphonic season, in Il Trovatore (Azucena) at the Mihailovsky Theater in St. Petersburg.
Her future plans include: the opening performance of Aida (Amneris) at the Arena di Verona, Bluebeard’s Castle in Boston, Der Zwerg (Ghita) at the San Carlo Theater in Naples, Trompe-la-mort (Asie) at the Opera National de Paris.
