Eszter Sümegi studied at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest. In 1992 she was the winner of the Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition in Philadelphia, USA.
In 1993 Eszter Sümegi made her professional debut at the Hungarian State Opera in the role of Mimi La Boheme. She continues as a member of the Hungarian State Opera today. Amongst the roles she has sung for the house are: Nedda I Pagliacci; Tosca; Leonora Il Trovatore; Angelica and Georgette from Puccini’s Trittico; Liu Turandot; Desdemona Otello; Countess Le Nozze di Figaro; Aida and Elsa in Katharina Wagner’s inaugural production of Lohengrin.
In 1993 Eszter Sümegi made her international debut as Ines La Favorita at Philidelphia’s Academy of Music under the guidance of Maestro Pavarotti. Since then she has gone on to guest at the Komische Oper in Berlin as Georgette - Il Tabarro, Liu - Turandot in Reyjkjavik, Tosca in Bregenz and Salzburg, Mimi, Georgette, Leonora Il Trovatore and Tosca for the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto, Michaela in Bellinzona, and Georgette in Karlsruhe.
Amongst regular concert appearances in Budapest including gala concerts with Jose Cura and Giuseppe Giacomini, Eszter Sümegi’s international concert engagements have included: Gorecki’s soprano solo in the Symphony No. 3 in Bregenz, a Verdi and Puccini Gala concerts at the Cemal Resit Rey Konsert Salon in Istanbul, a concert performance of Catalani’s La Wally in Paris, Verdi Requiem in Rome and Toronto, Brahms Requiem in Catania, as well as Gala Concerts in Philadelphia and at New York’s Lincoln Center.
In 2003 Eszter Sümegi released a solo album with the Budapest Concert Orchestra conducted by Maestro István Dénes.
In 2004/2005 season, Eszter Sümegi performed Tosca with Renato Bruson, Elsa in Wagner’s Lohengrin and Elisabeth in Tannhäuser in Budapest, as well as Rachmaninov’s The Bells in Ljubljana, Aida at the St Margarethen Summer Music Festival in Austria (which was recorded for DVD) Tosca for the Austin Lyric Opera in Texas, and made her debut at the Wiener Staatsoper as Tosca. In the 2005/2006 season Ms. Sümegi returned to the Wiener Staatsoper as Tosca, sang Gerhilde in the Theatre du Châtelet’s Ring Cycle, and Amelia - Ballo in Maschera and Tosca at Frankfurt Opera. This was followed by Tosca again at Oper Frankfurt in 2007, and again Tosca in Toronto in 2008, and Aida at Pittsburgh Opera the same year. Later the same year returning to Hungarian State Opera, with Manon, Puccini.
In 2009 she performed successfully in Il Trovatore by Verdi at Hungarian State Opera, and sang for the first time the role of Elena in I Vespri Siciliani by Verdi at the same Operahouse with great success.
Future engagements include Tosca and Liu at Hungarian State Opera, and again a new role as The Marschallin in Rosenkavalier by Strauss in March and April 2010 in Budapest, at the HSO.
